COMING SOON There are a few mods on here I had something to do with and a plethora of shared ones that I've found around the internet I'm sharing with credit given and original websites listed. I just wanted to group a lot of fun things together for those of you who enjoy mods by other random people. I'll start with Super Mario Bros 1-3. This was of course one of the first games I played as a kid and it was only a matter of time before discovering hacks and tools existed that I'd dabble in this myself. In 2007 I made "SMB1: Jerry's Remix" amongst a few others. Next we have Commander Keen. There are over 100 mods and some tools for the use of level editing and other such modding on the next page for this game. It was by id Software, and came out before Wolfenstein 3-D and Doom as their last side scrolling adventure game. Up next is Sonic The Hedgehog. Yes, there are plenty of Sonic hacks. Once you boot up Fusion you can snag one of these and give it a shot. There are a ton of Youtube videos of a lot of the mods if you'd rather just watch someone else beat one. After Commander Keen, id Software released Wolfenstein 3-D. It wasn't their first dabbling with 3D shooters. It was actually their third, after Hovertank 3-D and Catacomb 3-D. We can consider those tests, practice games, for what was to come. I also consider Wolfenstein 3-D a practice game or precursor to Doom. Doom was my ultimate game. It is still fun to this day with the sheer amount of enhancements to the engine and mapping quality that have come since its release in 1993. I made a lot of bad mods in 1995 and am working on "just for fun" sequels of better quality and also modern mods like a full redux/remake of Nightmares of Loki with all never everything, including a huge plot to give the name more of a reason to be. Raven software put out a few mythical games using the Doom engine. Heretic and Hexen were born shortly after Doom, and John Romero even helped with the coding, allowing flying in Heretic, and the use of hubs and scripting in Hexen. I have a collection of mods and cd-roms full of mods to peruse. And finally in the realm of fun little mods, I will stop at the most recent, if you can consider 1996 recent, Quake. Doom was technically not a real 3D game, as it used ray-casting technology to make renders for the player to see. Quake, however, used poly graphics to create true 3D environments to run around in. I have collected some links and mods for you to try out, and Quake enhanced on Steam also has mods included to play. |
