In the beginning, I bought doom 2. Once I realized it was more difficult to edit for Doom 2 with doom tools (which I found before the thoughts even crossed my mind to buy either doom) I then bought Doom 1 aka The Ultimate Doom. This one had four episodes and wasn't very editor friendly at the time due to none of the editors being up to date that I had. Mind you, when I started editing doom levels I hadn't played through doom yet. Honestly I hadn't beat anything past the first episode of the shareware and bought it specifically because I knew you could make your own levels if you bought the registered version and found the right tools. With that in mind, if you are looking for classic traditional "good" 90s levels, you probably should be on a different website for that one. Whenever I first started making levels for doom, I tried everything and couldn't figure out why they didn't run. I finally got one to run so I just replicated the weird shape over and over again that day and made a megawad. Every level was exactly the same but with different enemy line-ups and texture themes. It worked I guess for learning the ways of doom itself, the enemies, the texture names and what all is available to use. My parents also adopted special needs kids so I had siblings that really enjoyed the ease of these levels, especially with cheat codes. They were 5, if that says anything. Anyways, When I finally started figuring out more I still released all this trash on /idgames back when it was hosted on ftp.cdrom.com in the mid 90s, a very long time ago, and caught some negative flack for it even though they were basically a joke. Regardless I haven't deleted a single level I made in the 90s. It was too important to have something to play and I didn't see a point in thinking something wasn't good enough if I'm making it for me and siblings. Its still true I should not have ever put them on the internet on a site meant for actual doom levels. If you are curious, here is the three episode nonsense I speak of, Chambers of Death. |
