MY DOOM WADSWelcome to 1995. These were my very first experimental trash creations for The Ultimate Doom
when I was figuring things out but progressing on the level design a tad too slowly. I got stuck in ideas and carbon copied
things too much. Also, my first two levels were all I could get to work, so I made a full series out of each. The "Doom Nightmares" series then followed once I started getting levels here and there to do their job. I slowly but surely all in one year began on Nightmares of Loki and I guess wasn't quite ready yet even after that, so I quit for decades. Now I'm back and though its an old game, I'm old as well, so I don't really care ;)
I had Nightmares of Loki done more or less in 1999 when high school ended and I graduated, then I bought a PS1 and slowly worked on something I never released that isn't worth the time called "Loki's Realm" which was just a rehash of a few of the levels with reworked areas and detailing but nothing enough to call a new game. In 2003 I released Nightmares of Loki "as is" saying I'd fix it up for a version 2 someday. I never did. Instead, I got all bad reviews and more or less got pissed off that I thought I made some marvel and it ended up irritating people. I mean I admit the sounds were terrible but what got to the feels was the level design being the worst part. So I quit doom for years and years.
SO HERE IS THE RUNDOWN:
Chambers of Death 1-3 are carbon copies with some extra parts later on to the very first level I got to work. As you progress through the three I learn a little more
and experiment. Doom Battlefields was the second level, and the levels have a high imbalance of ammunition and health vs the enemies on the original, so I would cheat. I only made one megawad of that level, because I finally got levels to work by figuring out that linedefs in MS-DOS editors needed sidedefs manually added. I didn't even know what these were at the time. So after I figured this out, Nightmares was born. Doom Nightmares is basically a transition from not knowing anything at all to knowing a lot more. Chaos 3 has later become Nightmares 4 on the new Nightmares Ultra Deluxe edition I'm maybe working on. Nightmares 5 and 666 will be all new levels as I progress even further with trying to catch up and match the classic doom style, detail and all. I'm going to also have more open areas as I go, because I want to utilize what I've learned on these and update Nightmares of Loki 1 all the way to how it should have been in 1999. |
